KUJ Commends Nation Media Group For Reinstating 100% Workers Salaries

The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) ) welcomes the reinstatement of 100 per cent of workers’ salaries by the Nation Media Group (NMG).

KUJ also thanks the National Treasury for releasing over Ksh 400 million to media houses last week to settle pending bills in the media industry, which we believe will ease the financial stress on media houses. 

KUJ commends the Board of Directors NMG for respecting its obligations following the agreement we signed with them in 2020.

We hope that other media houses will also reinstate salaries of journalists to cushion them against hard economic times caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are also aware that Treasury last week released fund to settle pending bills in the media industry in efforts to support media houses deal with financial difficulties caused by accrued debts,” said Erick Oduor, Secretary General.

As a voice securing, promoting and protecting the welfare, interests and rights of all journalists, we are all aware of the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the industry, from job losses, reduced incomes, mental health and even claimed lives of some journalists.

It is therefore commendable the NMG has taken the initiative to protect their workers’ livelihoods by reinstating their full salaries. We believe this will motivate them to do more to sustain NMG’s business performance. In addition, it is a bold statement that through dialogue and consensus, a lot can be achieved.
