KUJ Condemns Killing of KBC Journalist Betty Mutekhele Barasa, Calls for Speedy Investigations
Kenya Union of Journalists has condemned the killing of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation journalist Betty Mutekhele Barasa last night (07 April 2020).
This is the second journalist to be murdered in less than a month. We, therefore, call on the Police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations to expedite their investigations and prosecute all those involved in the murder of the Video Editor.
In addition, we call on the investigators to dig deeper and find out the reason behind the heinous act, warning that it might be a repeat of the past years when journalists were targeted because of their work. KUJ condemns these attacks, as they constitute a serious assault on the independence of the media and the rights of all journalists.
Furthermore, KUJ calls on the Government and media to take measures to enhance the security of all its workers.
From the initial reports, Betty Barasa was shot twice while her family was held hostage by the assailants at her Ngong home at around 8:30 pm.
Our prayers are with the bereaved family as well as relatives and friends of the deceased.
