KUJ Conducts Training in Meru County, Opens Local Chapter
Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) completed a training workshop for Meru County journalists to empower them with knowledge regarding their safety and rights while on duty.
The training program culminated with the establishment of the KUJ Meru Chapter, which will be used as a vehicle for organising and recruitment of journalists in the region to be unionised.
Closing the workshop, KUJ Secretary General Erick Oduor assured the journalists that the union was committed to protecting their rights as workers. Oduor noted that there is rampant violation of journalists’ labour rights and only the union can help.
“Journalists must start considering themselves as workers just like other professionals. Poor pay or lack of pay is common in the industry, which calls for collective efforts through the union to established acceptable pay structure,” said Mr. Oduor
The training was conducted by Ms. Kwamboka Oyaro and Ms. Mary Daraja, who sit in the National Executive Council as Secretary for programs and training respectively.
